Funnily enough, I was just thinking recently about some photos of me at my desk when I still lived at home at the age of 21. My desk facing the window, always. The desk covered with notebooks and journals that I've either collaged on or glued a photo on or altered in some other way. Lots of art supplies, felt pens etc. Photos that I'd taken. I don't know what made me think of those photos, but it struck me how little has changed. Nowadays I like my home to *not* be filled with knick-knacks or to have stuff covering every inch of the walls, but it's very much that way in my studio! Which is where my desk is too, naturally.

I like your comics wall! I don't think it necessarily means anything about your younger self apart from the fact that you were making BOLD decorating choices! But what do I know. Not much.

I LOVE your current studio. And it’s always interesting to see through-lines through the years of how we arrange our spaces. My workspace has changed a lot, but I still have some of the same collecting and organizing tendencies. I wish I had a separate space just for making art, but as it stands now that space doubles as an office, so I’m a lot more restrained than I might otherwise be (maybe I’d even bring back the comics wall!😏)

I always dreamed of having a separate studio, but I’m not sure I actually believed I’d ever get it. And I didn’t get it till I was 58 years old. Now of course I find myself taking it for granted, and just wishing it were bigger, haha

I posted this a while back on this topic: https://substack.com/@davinrisk/p-155124683

I think it true that the spaces we create in can/should be representative of us. They don't need to be aspirational perfected spaces since that's usually the wrong kind of distraction but reminding ourselves of ourselves can be powerful.

Thanks for sharing! Your art/assemblage wall is so cool – I love how every item has a story. And I agree that trying to "perfect" a space can go wrong if it means stripping it of its unique qualities to make it fit some subjective standard. The most interesting spaces to me are usually the ones that don't hide the "hand of the artist" — come to think of it, that's my favorite kind of art too!

This definitely makes me wonder what my space communicates, given I have what feels like no central theme running through my furniture or art. There is a throughline of string lights that are present in every room of the house, though - definitely a comfort for me over harsh overhead lights!

The first word that comes to mind when I think of your space is “clean,” not just as in there’s no mess, but in that most items have a simple, classic design without a lot of ornamentation. I also see care and attention to detail in the wall art and how it’s presented/displayed. And I totally agree on string lights — there was a time when I considered getting rid of ours thinking it felt too “college,” but they create an undeniably cozy atmosphere! So much better than overhead lights.
