Can't wait for this AI bubble to burst properly. And then maybe we can reassess and actually develop and use when it would be genuinely helpful and not an idiotic gimmick.
Absolutely! As much of a hater as I am, I know there are some genuinely good use cases. They’re just drowned out by the chorus of hypemen saying AI is on the cusp of becoming God.
I couldn't even read this until now--I've been avoiding it--so deep is my aversion to AI. I just don't even want to read about it. But thank you for this new rallying cry: MOVE SLOW AND MAKE THINGS. Yes! With your hands. In real time. PLEASE, everyone. PLEASE.
Totally understand that impulse. I originally had a complete aversion to the subject of AI too, then went the other direction and became obsessed with learning about it. Now I’m trying to take a break from that (watching all the AI ads will do that to ya lol) and take my own advice by focusing more on making things!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this. I've been feeling exactly what you describe about the "move fast and break things" ethos that seems to have consumed companies and those bankrolling AI at the cost of real human making and communication. The hype about how "revolutionary" AI is comes at the cost of respect for intelligence and empathy.
Those ads for AI are just new renditions of the "you're too dumb to know how to do anything, so let my new-sounding invention do the work for you" kind of late-night tv ads I used to see. Thanks, again, for your clear writing about this issue.
Glad the piece resonated with you! The comparison to late night tv advertising is a good one: It also brings to mind those "life hack" videos, especially the really absurd ones that address the parts of life for which you never needed or wanted a "hack." 🫠
Yes, "life hacks"! Serious nonsense re-packaged for a new audience. All of advertising is about making problems out of usually solvable everyday, commonsense life issues and offering a "solution".

Well I definitely don't think having your head in the sand--as I do-- is a good thing. But that's where I'm at for the moment!

Thank you for articulating this so clearly. You hit the nail squarely on the head.
Thank you!
